Water Damaged Laptop — Everything Recovered, Back Working in 48 Hours
A full glass of water. A panicked call. And a laptop that came back from the dead.
The Situation
A Hills District home office worker knocked a full glass of water directly onto their open laptop while on a video call. The laptop shut down immediately. Following instinct, they grabbed a towel, mopped the surface — and then, critically, tried to turn it back on to check if it still worked. It did not. The screen flickered, sparked, and died. They called TechFix Pro about 20 minutes after the spill.
What We Found When We Arrived
The laptop arrived damp. We immediately removed the battery (still connected — the owner had not thought to do this), which was warm and showing a small amount of oxidation on the terminals. Opening the chassis, we found water had tracked into the keyboard membrane, pooled around the RAM slots, and reached one edge of the motherboard near the power management circuitry. The attempt to power on had caused a short in the power management IC — a small but repairable component. The display panel showed oxidation damage but the panel itself was intact. The SSD, critically, was completely dry — the storage compartment sits on the opposite side of the chassis and was sealed by the thermal padding.
How We Fixed It
**Immediate:** Battery disconnected and unit placed in a warm, ventilated environment for 24 hours to allow residual moisture to evaporate completely before any further assessment. **Assessment:** Full diagnostic after drying. The motherboard short was confirmed in the power management section. The SSD tested as fully intact using an external enclosure — all 4 years of files, photos and business documents fully accessible and intact. **Repair:** The power management fault was resoldered. The keyboard membrane replaced (standard replacement part). Display panel cleaned and tested — LCD intact, no pixel damage. **Testing:** 48-hour burn-in test with the chassis open. No further faults detected. Full reassembly and final test.
The Outcome
The laptop was returned fully functional 48 hours after the spill. All data intact. Total cost was less than a third of a replacement laptop. The owner now has an automatic cloud backup running so a repeat incident would never result in data loss regardless of hardware outcome.
What to do immediately if you spill water on a laptop
Turn it off and disconnect power immediately
The single most important action in the first 30 seconds. Hold the power button until it shuts off. Unplug the charger. Shut down any external power. Every second it stays on with liquid inside increases the likelihood of a permanent short.
Do NOT try to turn it on to check
This is the most common mistake and the one most likely to cause irreversible damage. Even if the laptop appears to still work, a delayed short can destroy components hours later. Leave it off.
Remove the battery if accessible
On older laptops with removable batteries, take it out immediately. On modern laptops with internal batteries, this requires opening the chassis — something we can do on-site within the hour.
Call a technician within the hour
The faster a professional can open the chassis, dry the internal components properly and assess the damage, the better the outcome. Do not leave it in rice — that is a myth. Proper drying requires heat and airflow with the chassis open.
Frequently asked questions
Can a water damaged laptop be repaired?
Often yes — the success rate depends on how quickly the power was cut, whether the owner tried to turn it on after the spill, and which components the water reached. SSDs and hard drives are more resilient than circuit boards. Most water damaged laptops we receive have at least their data recoverable, and many are fully repairable.
How much does water damage laptop repair cost in Western Sydney?
Keyboard replacement is $80–$150. Motherboard repair (if possible) is $150–$300. If the motherboard is beyond repair, data recovery to a new device starts from $150. We always assess first and quote before starting.
How long does water damage repair take?
We require at least 24 hours of drying before proper assessment. Most repairs are completed within 48–72 hours of the initial call.
Is my data safe after water damage?
In most cases yes. SSDs and hard drives are often in protected compartments and survive liquid damage that destroys the motherboard. Even when the laptop cannot be repaired, data recovery is frequently possible.
