8 Years of Family Photos Recovered From a Dead Laptop
The laptop was beyond repair. The photos were not.
The Situation
A family in Western Sydney contacted TechFix Pro in a state of distress. Their household laptop — the only device used to store family photos for 8 years — had stopped working after a power surge during a storm. The laptop would not turn on at all. Inside were photos of births, first days of school, holidays, celebrations and moments that could never be recreated. There was no backup.
What We Found When We Arrived
The power surge had blown the laptop's power management board — the circuitry that regulates power to the motherboard, display and storage. The damage was visible: a burnt component on the board near the DC-in port. The hard drive itself — a traditional 750GB Seagate spinning drive — was in a sealed compartment on the opposite side of the chassis from the damage. Using an external SATA-to-USB adapter, we connected the drive to a separate laptop. It spun up, clicked once, and mounted successfully. Every file was intact.
How We Fixed It
**Phase 1 — Immediate assessment.** Connected the drive externally within 30 minutes of arriving. Confirmed all data accessible. Created a full sector-by-sector backup image of the drive before touching any files — standard practice to ensure a safe copy exists before recovery begins. **Phase 2 — Recovery.** All photos, documents, videos and downloads copied to a new 2TB external hard drive. Total: 214GB of files, 31,847 photos and videos, all intact. **Phase 3 — Cloud backup setup.** Microsoft OneDrive configured on the family's new laptop (purchased separately) with automatic photo sync. Every new photo now backs up to the cloud automatically. They will never be in this situation again. **Phase 4 — Laptop assessment.** Assessed cost to repair the blown board: economically not worthwhile for the age of the device. Recommended replacement, which the family proceeded with independently.
The Outcome
Every single photo and file recovered. 8 years of memories preserved. The family now has a cloud backup, an external backup drive, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing their data is protected. Job time: 2 hours on-site.
What this means for your family's data
A dead laptop does not mean dead data
In the majority of cases, when a laptop dies it is a component failure — the screen, the motherboard, the power circuitry — not the drive itself. The drive and its contents are often completely intact and recoverable even when the laptop is beyond economic repair.
The 3-2-1 backup rule
Three copies of your data. Two on different storage media. One off-site (cloud). If you only have your photos on one device with no cloud backup and no external drive — you are one accident away from losing everything permanently.
Act fast and do not panic
If your laptop dies and you have irreplaceable data on it, do not attempt to open it yourself or try multiple methods to get it started. Call a professional. The more times a failing drive is powered on, the greater the risk of further damage.
Cloud backup for photos is free
Google Photos, iCloud and Microsoft OneDrive all offer free photo backup. Setting this up takes about 10 minutes and protects your photos permanently. We set this up for every customer after a data recovery job.
Frequently asked questions
Can you recover data from a laptop that won't turn on?
In most cases yes. When a laptop fails to power on, it is usually a motherboard or power component fault — not a storage failure. The drive is often completely intact and data is recoverable using an external adapter. We assess this immediately when we arrive.
How much does data recovery cost in Western Sydney?
Basic data recovery from an intact drive (externally connected) is $99–$149. More complex recovery involving drive damage or file system corruption is $150–$350. We always confirm the data is present and accessible before charging for recovery.
How long does data recovery take?
For drives where the data is accessible but the laptop won't power on, recovery of a typical laptop drive (500GB–1TB) takes 2–4 hours on-site. We transfer directly to an external drive you provide or we supply one.
What if the hard drive itself is damaged?
Physically damaged drives (clicking, grinding, not recognised) require specialised recovery tools and sometimes clean-room disassembly. We handle the majority of these cases and refer extreme cases to specialist labs. We always assess and quote before proceeding.
